Ever wondered how a former shoe warehouse could transform into a beacon of faith? That’s precisely the story of the Merkez-Moschee, right here in Essen. This Merkez-Moschee, also known as the DITIB-Central Mosque, stands proudly in the Altendorf district. It replaced a smaller building that the growing community had outgrown.

The Merkez-Moschee’s story is one of dedication and community spirit. The DITIB-Verein in Essen-Altendorf spearheaded the project. Oylar Saguner, a local architect involved in the CentrO planning, converted the old Böhmer shoe warehouse. Construction costs totaled around 4 million euros. These funds came from the community’s hard work, savings, the sale of their old building, and generous donations.

Notice the large dome above us. This aluminum dome measures an impressive 31.44 meters in diameter. Architect Saguner claimed it was the largest dome space in Europe at the time. Sunlight filters through 28 windows illuminating the 800-square-meter prayer hall. This prayer hall accommodates 360 worshippers. Imagine this space filled with the devout during prayer.

The Merkez-Moschee is more than just a prayer space. The building is divided into three distinct areas. Public spaces include social rooms, a lecture hall for 180 people, and a 600-square-meter sports hall. There is also a language institute plus youth, senior, and women’s cafes. The second area is the large prayer room we just discussed. Finally, the third area houses administration offices and apartments for the Imam, caretaker, and visitors.

Originally, there were plans for a symbolic minaret. It would have been a transformed emergency staircase encased in stainless steel. The tower was planned to feature the word “babel” in many languages as a reminder of mutual understanding. However, this unique minaret was never built. Instead, a five-meter-high soundproof wall was erected to protect nearby homes.

The Merkez-Moschee’s location sparked debate during its planning. Some felt it was too hidden in the Altendorf industrial area. Others worried about increased traffic. However, studies suggested minimal impact. Despite concerns, the Merkez-Moschee was approved.

The DITIB-Central Mosque opened its doors for worship in September 2023. In January 2024, the Merkez-Moschee was officially opened for worship with prayers after a decade of construction. Today, the Merkez-Moschee stands as a symbol of faith, community, and transformation. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with a shared vision.
