Thirteen and a half acres of tranquility. That’s Merion Botanical Park. A green oasis in the heart of Merion Station. Founded in 1944 by the Botanical Society of Lower Merion this park wasn’t always so beautiful. It started as an abandoned lot. But thanks to the Society’s vision and hard work it transformed.
Imagine a group of dedicated residents. They purchased the abandoned land. They convinced Lower Merion Township to buy the adjacent parcel. Together they created this botanical garden and public park. Laura Barnes wife of art collector Albert C Barnes was one of the founders. Her involvement highlights the park’s connection to the area’s rich history and culture.
Merion Botanical Park isn’t just pretty flowers. It’s a vibrant ecosystem. Over eighty-five bird species call it home. You might spot squirrels rabbits or even deer. The park’s diverse flora is stunning. Azaleas dogwoods magnolias cut-leaf maples redbuds rhododendrons and viburnum flourish here. The Botanical Society continues to actively manage and expand the park. They’ve undertaken many projects including invasive plant control ecological restoration and the installation of bird nest boxes and a Monarch Way Station. A recent cleanup even removed over 1000 pounds of trash.
In the spring the park bursts with color. The azaleas and dogwoods put on a breathtaking display. Fall brings vibrant foliage. The crisp air is perfect for a walk along the well-maintained trails.
