Merdingen. A name that whispers of history, wine, and a charm all its own. Here we stand, on the western slopes of the Tuniberg, overlooking this picturesque village. Merdingen is nestled amidst vineyards. It boasts a baroque townscape, a testament to its rich past. Half-timbered houses, ornate fountains, and the magnificent St. Remigius Church paint a vivid picture of a bygone era. In 1989, Merdingen received a prestigious gold medal. Both the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Federal Republic of Germany recognized its well-preserved townscape. But Merdingen is more than just pretty facades. Its heart beats with vibrant traditions. The annual carnival procession is a spectacle. Over one hundred groups participate, drawing crowds from far and wide. The Gassenweinfest, a traditional wine festival, showcases Merdingen’s finest wines and culinary delights. Let’s step back in time to the 18th century. Master builder Johann Caspar Bagnato was commissioned by the Teutonic Order of Freiburg to construct a church. From 1738 to 1741, he crafted the late Baroque masterpiece we see today: St. Remigius Church. Its interior is a feast for the senses. The stucco work by Francesco Pozzi, the altar and pulpit by Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer, and the breathtaking ceiling frescoes and altar leaves by Franz Joseph Spiegler create a harmonious blend of artistry and devotion. Above the main portal, a larger-than-life sculpture of an Immaculata by Johann Christian Wentzinger stands watch. Wentzinger had family ties to Merdingen, adding a personal touch to this grand edifice. The church has undergone several renovations over the centuries, each reflecting the prevailing style of its time. But today, after meticulous restoration, it stands once again in its original glory, a beacon of Baroque splendor. Merdingen also holds secrets from a much earlier era. Beneath the soil lie the remnants of a Roman estate, dating back to the 1st century AD. Imagine the scene. Romans enjoying the luxuries of a bathhouse, complete with hot and cold water tubs and the ingenious underfloor heating system. These Roman baths were rediscovered before World War II. Decades later, in 1977-78, the site was thoroughly examined. To protect this precious relic of the past, a protective roof was erected in 1980. You can visit the Roman baths today. A leisurely walk or bicycle ride from Merdingen will lead you there. Along the way, you’ll encounter the Bettelbrünnle, a charming spot perfect for a picnic or a barbecue. So, as you explore Merdingen, remember its layers of history. From the Romans to the Baroque era and beyond, Merdingen offers a captivating journey through time.
