Nestled within the serene landscape of the Morris Arboretum & Gardens stands the Mercury Loggia. It’s a small, temple-like structure, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The Mercury Loggia was built in 1913. It was created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Compton estate’s founding. The Loggia’s design evokes the feeling of a Roman temple. Constructed from Wissahickon schist, it boasts an arched plaster roof and a mosaic tile floor. Inside, you’ll find a bronze statue of Mercury, identifiable by his iconic winged sandals. Beneath the Loggia lies a hidden grotto. This artificial cavern, also lined with Wissahickon schist, offers a cool, secluded retreat. Historically, grottos like this were designed as spaces for intellectual contemplation. A narrow, winding path leads you through the grotto. It emerges into the Ravine Garden on the north side of the Loggia. Here, large stone blocks form the ravine walls, also serving as anchors for vibrant flowering bulbs and perennials. An artificial streambed meanders through the Ravine Garden, its waters collecting in a tranquil pool at the path’s end. The Mercury Loggia offers a captivating blend of art, architecture, and nature. It’s a testament to the vision of John and Lydia Morris, who transformed their estate into a unique and eclectic garden.
