Ever wondered how Salt Lake City’s canyons could be brought to life in a park? Here at Liberty Park, we find ourselves standing before the reimagined Seven Canyons Fountain. This fountain is not just a water feature. It’s a work of art that encapsulates the essence of the Wasatch Front.

The Seven Canyons Fountain was originally built in 1993. It quickly became a beloved landmark within Liberty Park. For nearly 30 years, it served as a key feature for residents and visitors alike. However, by 2017, the fountain faced closure due to health and maintenance concerns.

The idea behind the Seven Canyons Fountain was ingenious. Conceived by architects Boyd Blackner and Elizabeth Blackner, landscape architect Stephen Goldsmith, and sculptor John Swain, it aimed to recreate Salt Lake City’s canyons. The vision was to allow people to explore miniature versions of the region’s iconic waterways. Rock groupings represent the majestic mountains of the Wasatch Front.

Miniature rivers and creeks flow from these canyons. They represent City Creek, Red Butte, Emigration, Parleys, East Mill Creek, Big Cottonwood, and Little Cottonwood. All eventually connect to the Jordan River and flow into the Great Salt Lake. This intricate design symbolized the interconnectedness of Salt Lake City’s natural water systems.

Originally, the fountain was donated to Salt Lake City residents by Mr. O.C. Tanner in 1993. Tanner intended it to be a legacy gift. The fountain’s operation required a substantial 21000 gallons of water per day. Restoring it to its full flowing glory was estimated to cost between $2 million and $4 million.

Following community engagement, Salt Lake City decided to reimagine the Seven Canyons Fountain. It is now a dry art feature, maintaining its artistic presence without the heavy water usage. The modification includes specialty concrete finishes. These finishes artistically depict the streams and landscape. They serve as symbolic representations of the various canyons.

Even in its dry state, enhancements such as landscaping, lighting, and handrails add to the area’s appeal. Turf replacement ensures the site remains inviting. Interestingly, two of the original artists, Stephen Goldsmith and Liz Blackner, have been involved in the redesign. They hope one day the fountain might flow again.

As we stand here, we can appreciate how the Seven Canyons Fountain continues to educate and inspire. It represents Salt Lake City’s commitment to art, history, and environmental consciousness. The fountain serves as a reminder of the region’s natural beauty. It also highlights the importance of preserving our resources for future generations.
