Sixty shops. That’s a lot of shopping. Right here at the Mercado Nuremberg. This wasn’t always a shopping center though. Before the Mercado rose its modern glass and steel structure a stadium stood here. The Linde-Stadion to be exact. Can you imagine cheering crowds filling this very spot? Then came a change. Nuremberg decided to build a new ice sports hall. The Linde-Stadion was demolished. Initially the city wanted to build homes. But no investors stepped up. So in 1997 a new idea emerged: a shopping center. The Linde-Center as it was first called.
Construction began in June 2001. The Mercado’s foundation was laid in October of that year. The grand opening was on September 4 2003. A staggering 300 000 people visited the Mercado in its first three days. Quite the spectacle. Now the Mercado is a well-established shopping destination in Nuremberg’s northern district. It successfully competes with the city center.
The Mercado boasts approximately 20 000 square meters of retail space. Another 7 650 square meters are office space. Eighty shops are spread across two floors. You’ll find clothing stores. Food stores. Jewelry shops. Service businesses too. Department stores restaurants and cafes complete the offering. A separate office area on three floors houses doctors a dance studio and even the NRJ Nuremberg radio station. Did you know that?
The Mercado has 1 650 parking spaces. It’s conveniently located near the Nordostbahnhof transportation hub. Bus lines 30 35 45 46 49 65 and 95 serve it. So does the U-Bahn line U2 and regional train line RB21. The Mercado is also easily accessible by car from the Nuremberg-Nord exit of the A3 via Bayreuther Straße. So getting here is a breeze.
