Step into a world of wonder. Behold the Meranti-Halle a breathtaking tropical paradise nestled within Münster’s Allwetterzoo. This isn’t just another zoo exhibit. It’s a journey. A journey into the heart of a South American rainforest.

The Meranti-Halle named after the endangered Meranti tree of the tropics opened in 2023. It’s a magnificent structure. Its translucent foil dome bathes the interior in natural light. This mimics the natural day-night rhythm crucial for the flora and fauna within. The sheer size is astounding nearly 4400 square meters. It’s home to approximately 15 exotic and threatened animal species.

Imagine yourself walking the elevated walkways. These bridges offer incredible views from 7 meters high. Look down and you might spot the playful red varis monkeys. Listen closely. You might hear the boisterous calls of howler monkeys echoing through the lush vegetation. Or the high-pitched peeps of giant otters. These creatures can grow up to 2 meters long. A glass viewing panel allows for underwater observations of these fascinating animals.

The plants are equally impressive. South American trees shrubs and vines create a dense jungle atmosphere. Some plants even spill over onto the visitor paths adding to the immersive experience. Explore further. Discover lowland tapirs and anteaters. These animals also have outdoor enclosures so their presence inside isn’t always guaranteed. Smaller terrariums line the pathways although some were unoccupied during a July 2024 visit.

But the Meranti-Halle’s magnificence extends beyond its beauty. It’s a testament to sustainability. This is Europe’s first regenerative tropical hall. It’s completely climate-neutral. It utilizes geothermal energy from 36 boreholes 250 meters deep. Warm water is pumped up heating the hall. Concrete core activation helps to regulate temperature. The innovative ETFE roof prevents heat loss. Solar energy powers the pumps and water treatment. Even rainwater is collected and reused.

The Meranti-Halle is more than just a zoo exhibit. It is a celebration of biodiversity and a symbol of conservation. It serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing destruction of tropical habitats. It’s a place where you can witness the beauty of nature while learning about the importance of protecting it. Don’t just visit the Meranti-Halle experience it.
