“Can you imagine the stories held within these grounds?” I ask, gesturing towards Menteşe Şehir Yeni Mezarlığı. Menteşe Şehir Yeni Mezarlığı stands as a poignant reminder of life’s fleeting nature. It also stands as a testament to Muğla’s community spirit.
The municipality actively addresses the needs of its citizens from birth until death. Muğla Büyükşehir Belediyesi provides free funeral transport services. In 2023, Menteşe gained 1,700 new burial plots. An additional 1,500 plots were added in 2024. These efforts alleviate the pressure on burial space in the region.
Menteşe Şehir Yeni Mezarlığı received significant improvements. 10,502 square meters of paving stones were laid. 438 meters of reinforced concrete walls were constructed. Also 4,175 meters of borders were created. These enhancements make the cemetery more accessible. The improvements also give it a more modern appearance.
In a tragic turn of events in 2016, Sultan Uncu lost her life. She was swept away by floodwaters in Mersin. Her body was later found in Muğla’s Dalaman district. With no immediate family to claim her, she was laid to rest here. She was buried in the Menteşe Şehir Yeni Mezarlığı’s cemetery for the unidentified. DNA testing later confirmed her identity. Her husband and brother-in-law then retrieved her remains. They transported her to Hatay for burial.
Menteşe Şehir Yeni Mezarlığı serves as a final resting place. It also stands as a place for reflection. Muğla Büyükşehir Belediyesi continues to maintain existing cemeteries. They ensure that these spaces remain dignified. These spaces allow families to remember loved ones. The municipality’s commitment extends to creating new burial areas. They are addressing the growing need for these spaces.
As we stand here at Menteşe Şehir Yeni Mezarlığı let us reflect on the lives that have passed. Let’s also appreciate the community that continues to honor their memory.
