Irene Vilar’s “Mensageiro” statue stands tall, overlooking the Douro River. This bronze sculpture, often called “The Angel” by locals, is more than just a piece of art. It’s a symbol of hope for the city of Porto. Mensageiro was unveiled in 2001. Its creator, Irene Vilar, was born in Matosinhos in 1930. She developed a strong connection with Foz do Douro, living and working there from the age of 19. Vilar’s artistic career spanned five decades, encompassing sculpture, coin and medal design, and painting. Her work has been displayed internationally, from Germany and South Africa to Brazil, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Macau. She garnered numerous awards and accolades throughout her life. The Mensageiro, made of Vilar’s preferred medium, bronze, is an expressionistic piece. It majestically graces the Douro River bank near Cais de Sobreiras. Vilar herself stated that the Mensageiro brought “good hope” to Porto. This sentiment resonates with the people of Porto, who often leave flowers and candles at the statue’s base, turning it into a place of reverence. Irene Vilar passed away in 2008 at the age of 77, but her Mensageiro continues to inspire hope and offer a place of solace in Porto.
