Turquoise and gold grab your attention. The Mendini-Haus stands before us. This building is more than just an office. It is a statement. Let me tell you about this unique structure.

The Mendini-Haus is located at the corner of Lange Laube and Stiftstraße. It is in the heart of Hannover. The building we see today is a transformation of older structures. These original buildings were damaged in World War II. In the 1950s, simple functional buildings were erected in their place. They formed a complex with the Anzeiger-Hochhaus.

Fast forward to the 21st century. The Madsack publishing company commissioned Alessandro and Francesco Mendini to redesign the facade. The brothers created a “glass-only” construction. This design encased the entire building including the closed wall areas in double-layered glass. The Mendini-Haus became part of the media center. It also echoes the spirit of the Anzeiger-Hochhaus built in the 1920s.

Notice the shimmering turquoise glass facade. Glimpses of gold-yellow reflect from the stairwell projections. From a distance, the building appears uniform yet abstract. As you get closer, an intriguing effect emerges. The color seems to shift. It follows your movements.

This is no illusion. It is an interference effect created by the double glazing. Vertical colored lines are printed on both layers of glass. This creates a semi-transparent effect. You can see the similar line patterns on the inner glass. The overlapping lines and shadows create the shifting colors.

Some areas are doubly semi-transparent. They offer glimpses into the building. Other darker inner surfaces reflect the surroundings. The Mendini brothers have left their mark elsewhere in Hannover. Look for their distinctive BUSSTOPS bus stop at Steintorplatz. It was erected in the 1990s. It is within sight of the Anzeiger-Hochhaus.

The Mendini-Haus is not just a building. It is an experience. It is a testament to the power of design. It is a reminder that even the most functional structures can become works of art. Take a moment to appreciate the Mendini-Haus. It is a unique gem in Hannover’s architectural landscape.
