A granite tear rolls down the cheek of time. Here at the Vietnam Veterans Plaza, the past isn’t just remembered, it’s felt. This plaza, nestled in Lower Manhattan’s Financial District, isn’t just a space; it’s a sanctuary. Vietnam Veterans Plaza honors the New Yorkers who served in the Vietnam War. It’s a poignant tribute to the 1,741 city residents who lost their lives and the 250,000 who served between 1964 and 1975. Originally, this very spot was a bustling roadway known as Coenties Slip, used by Dutch sailors as far back as the 17th century. It was filled in 1835, and became Jeannette Park in 1884, dedicated to the ship from the ill-fated Jeannette expedition. The park saw many transformations over the years, from recreational courts to an amphitheater fountain. Finally, in 1982, it found its true calling as a memorial for Vietnam veterans. Donald Trump, as co-chairman of the commission, even contributed $1 million to the $2.5 million raised for the memorial’s construction. The Vietnam Veterans Plaza was dedicated on May 6, 1985. It features a glass-block wall inscribed with excerpts from letters, poems, and diary entries from the Vietnam War era. The Vietnam Veterans Plaza was rededicated in 2001 after a $7 million restoration. A Walk of Honor, composed of twelve granite pylons, displays the names of all 1,741 New Yorkers who died in the war. At the heart of the Vietnam Veterans Plaza is a powerful message of remembrance, resilience, and reconciliation. It’s a place where the echoes of war intertwine with the whispers of peace, a testament to the enduring human spirit.
