However, by 1930, a challenge arose. The income from sports games was not enough to cover the property taxes. The owners then offered a portion of the field to the City. The aim was to create a playground to alleviate the tax burden.
In the following year, the central section was transferred to the Board of Education. This ensured continued use by Flushing High School. Finally, in 1935, the City officially received Flushing Fields. An Art Moderne-style memorial was erected on the southern portion of the property.

The granite stele features a bronze plaque. Seventy names are inscribed on it. The Flushing High School Memorial Field is in the center. The Leonardo Ingravallo Playground is at the northern end. The playground includes a baseball field and two softball fields. There are also courts for basketball, handball, and tennis.
Renovations in 1995 and 2003 updated the playground. These updates included safety features and improved drainage. Today, Memorial Field of Flushing remains a popular venue for organized sports. It is a lasting gift from the neighborhood’s residents to the city.
