“A somber reminder of a dark day…” a voice whispers behind you. You are standing before the Memorial dedicated to the 1972 Olympic Tragedy, a solemn granite monument known as the Klagebalken. The Memorial dedicated to the 1972 Olympic Tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic events that unfolded during the 1972 Summer Olympics. This space stands as a testament to the eleven Israeli Olympic team members and one German police officer who were tragically killed by the Palestinian terrorist group Black September.

The Memorial dedicated to the 1972 Olympic Tragedy, inaugurated in 1995, wasn’t the first attempt to commemorate the victims. Initially, there were plans to erect a more elaborate memorial at the site of the athletes’ former lodging at 31 Connollystraße. However, those plans faced resistance and ultimately faltered. Instead, this simpler, yet deeply moving, monument marks the location. The memorial, crafted from unpolished granite, takes the form of a massive, slightly inclined slab. Its rough-hewn surface evokes a sense of rawness and pain. This design, seemingly simple, holds profound symbolism. The tilted angle symbolizes the disruption of the peaceful Olympic spirit.

While the primary Memorial dedicated to the 1972 Olympic Tragedy is located in the Olympic Park, a separate memorial exists at the Fu00fcrstenfeldbruck airbase. This location marks the tragic climax of the hostage crisis, where the failed rescue attempt left all eleven Israeli hostages and one German police officer dead.
