What if I told you that visiting this complex is akin to a minor Hajj for Muslims? This is the Memorial complex of Imam Al-Bukhari. It stands as a testament to a revered scholar and theologian. Let’s delve into the story of this sacred place.

Imam Al-Bukhari was born in Bukhara in 810. He was a collector of Hadith. These are accounts of Prophet Muhammad’s sayings and deeds. Al-Bukhari authored “Al-Jomiy al-Saheeh.” This is the second most important book for Muslims after the Quran.

By the age of ten, Al-Bukhari knew thousands of hadiths by heart. Driven by his thirst for knowledge he traveled extensively. He visited Damascus, Cairo and Baghdad. Al-Bukhari collected nearly 600,000 traditions. He carefully selected 7275 that he deemed trustworthy.

At the end of his life, Al-Bukhari returned to Bukhara. However, he was banished by Emir Halid ibn Ahmad. Al-Bukhari then headed for Samarkand. He fell ill and died in the Hartang settlement in 870.

Over time, the site became a revered place. In the 16th century, a small burial vault and mosque were built. Plane trees were planted around this holy ground. During the Soviet era, the site was neglected. But in 1945, it was revived thanks to President Sukarno of Indonesia. He requested to pay respects to Al-Bukhari.

Following Uzbekistan’s independence, the Memorial complex of Imam Al-Bukhari was built in 1998. The finest craftsmen from across Uzbekistan contributed to its construction. The Memorial complex of Imam Al-Bukhari includes a mausoleum and a mosque. The mosque can accommodate 1500 worshippers. There are also other buildings around the inner courtyard.

The mausoleum has a 17-meter dome. Its interior showcases stucco fretwork, marble, and granite. In the center lies a tombstone of light blue onyx. The Memorial complex of Imam Al-Bukhari also houses the Dorus Hadis educational center. Here, scholars study hadiths.

The walls of the Imam Al-Bukhari mosque display glazed tile ornaments. A prized relic hangs in the mihrab niche. It is the Kiswa. This is a fabric from the Kaaba. It was a gift from the King of Saudi Arabia.

Today, the Memorial complex of Imam Al-Bukhari stands as a beacon of faith. It honors a great scholar. Its beauty and spiritual significance leave a lasting impression. As you explore this complex, remember the life and work of Imam Al-Bukhari. Appreciate the rich history and artistry around you.
