“How did Memorial Baptist Church get its name?” That’s a question many ask as they stand before this historic building. Let’s journey back in time to uncover the story of this church.

Memorial Baptist Church’s story starts with humble beginnings. In 1881, two women named Maude and Sallie Kenyon sought out all the Baptists in their town. They wanted to start a Sunday school. The first meeting took place at the Kenyon’s home on October 9, 1881.

At the time, the Baptists were few and poor. They could only afford lesson books. Songs were copied by hand and shared each Sunday. After two years, the group moved their meetings to the town hall. The women began planning for a church building. With courage, they bought a lot for $300. This is the very ground upon which Memorial Baptist Church stands today.

On September 6, 1891, the church was officially formed with twenty-one members. The name “Memorial” was chosen carefully. It was selected because of memorial windows. These windows honored loved ones who had passed.

Tragedy struck on September 29, 1896. A cyclone destroyed almost everything. Only a marble table-top survived. The determined members of Memorial Baptist Church rebuilt. In January 1898, the new building was completed.

For many years, the church thrived under various leaders. Then, on March 9, 1941, disaster struck again. A fire completely destroyed the church building. But the congregation’s spirit remained unbroken. Once more, Memorial Baptist Church rose from the ashes. The rebuilt church opened on October 19, 1941.

As the church grew, more space was needed. An educational area was added in 1965. Throughout its history, Memorial Baptist Church focused on God’s glory.

In 2019, Memorial Baptist Church began a new chapter. The members voted to revitalize the church. They looked forward to reaching everyone with the Gospel.

The story of Memorial Baptist Church is one of faith and perseverance. From a small group meeting in a home, to a thriving church. Despite facing destruction twice, the church always rebuilt. The story shows the bright past and even brighter future of Memorial Baptist Church. The name “Memorial” reminds us of those honored within its walls. It also reminds us of the enduring spirit of its members.
