In 1881, two determined sisters, Maude and Sallie Kenyon, sparked a flame of faith that would eventually become Memorial Baptist Church. They invited all Baptists in St. George to gather at their home. This small group, armed with handwritten hymns and unwavering belief, formed the first Baptist Sunday school in the area. They met in the town hall for two years before the women, with remarkable courage, purchased the land where Memorial Baptist Church now stands. Memorial Baptist Church officially began its journey on September 6, 1891. The church was named “Memorial” to honor the numerous memorial windows donated by the community. Sadly, disaster struck in 1896 when a cyclone demolished the building, leaving only a marble tabletop. Undeterred, the congregation rebuilt in 1898, only to face another devastating blow in 1941 when a fire ravaged the structure. Once again, the resilient members of Memorial Baptist Church rallied, and a new building opened its doors the same year. The church continued to grow. An educational space was added in 1965. In 2019, Memorial Baptist Church embarked on a revitalization, dedicated to sharing their message with future generations. The church’s history is filled with stories of faith, resilience, and community. Memorial Baptist Church continues to be a beacon of hope.
