Perhaps Madras’s best-kept secret, the Memon Mosque, stands as a testament to a vibrant community. Its story is intertwined with trade, faith, and the pursuit of identity. Let’s delve into the unique history of this beautiful mosque.

The Cutchi Memons, a Muslim community with roots stretching back over 150 years, built this Chennai landmark. They migrated from Gujarat. They established themselves as prominent traders. The mosque reflects their dedication to Islam and their distinct cultural identity.

Before 1870, Mr. Abdul Rahim Patel was assigned from Karachi as the “Patel of Madras.” He conducted business after his arrival. His son, Mr. Zackaria Abdul Rahim Sait “Mateen,” was born in Madras in 1884. He later became a prolific writer. In 1880, the Corporation of Madras gave land to Cutchi Memons. This land was for their cemetery.

By the 20th century, the Cutchi Memon Jamath was formally established. Janab Hajee Ebrahim Sait was its first president. He was followed by Janab Hajee Jounus Abba Sait. The Jamath registered under the Society Act. It defined a Cutchi Memon as someone whose parents were both Cutchi Memons.

In court, the Jamath’s lawyer cited a treatise by Justice Mulla. It referenced Cutchi Memons as a Muslim community. The Jamath won. It established that Cutchi Memons were a community with Islamic faith. They promote education, economic, and social interests.

Textile trade flourished. The new generation pursued higher education. Hajee Essa Abba Sait gifted property in 1917. It became a Jamat Khana. He created a trust in 1919. It established a madrassa. It also established a Musafirkhana for Muslim visitors. He took interest in constructing a Masjid in Anderson Street. This Masjid is now called the “Memon Masjid.”

Adam Hajee Mohammed Sait arrived in 1902. He was conferred the title of Khan Bahadur. He became the Sheriff of Madras. He was also the Reserve Bank Director of Madras Province. Two other Cutchi Memons were honored with the title of Khan Bahadur. They were Moosa Hajee Ebrahim Sait and Hajee Yousuff Hajee Joonus Sait.

Today, about 250 Cutchi Memon families live in Madras. The Jamath helps its members. It offers interest-free loans. It gives scholarships. It also manages the beautiful Masjid at their Kabrastan. Young Cutchi Memons collect funds during Ramadan. This money is for the needy.

The Memon Mosque stands as a testament to a community’s unwavering faith. It is a dedication to preserving its unique identity. It showcases its contributions to Chennai’s cultural mosaic. It represents over 150 years of history and heritage. The mosque is not just a place of worship. It is a symbol of resilience, community, and the enduring spirit of the Cutchi Memons.
