Didn’t you know the Melvindale Library has a story that stretches back almost a century? Let’s step inside and uncover its past. The Melvindale Library first opened in 1928. It started with just 500 books. These books were housed in Mrs. Gardner’s Drug Store on Oakwood Boulevard.
In 1929, the collection grew and moved. It found a new home across the street in its own building. This was a big step for the library. The present Melvindale Library building was dedicated in 1950. Today, the library boasts over 30,000 volumes. It has grown significantly from its humble beginnings.
The Melvindale Library is part of The Library Network or TLN. This network includes over 74 libraries. These libraries are located throughout Wayne and Oakland counties. The TLN membership allows the Melvindale Library to share resources. Patrons can borrow items from other network libraries. They can also return items to any TLN library for free.
If you live or go to school in Melvindale, you can get a library card. This card unlocks a world of possibilities. With it, you can borrow books and audiobooks. You can also check out DVDs and CDs. Wi-Fi hotspots and Chromebooks are available too. Best of all, these services are free.

The Melvindale Library is located at 18650 Allen Road. You can call them at 313-429-1090. The library is open Monday and Wednesday from 10 am to 6 pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, it’s open from 12 pm to 8 pm. Saturday hours are 10 am to 4 pm. The library is closed on Fridays and Sundays.
