Stepping onto Chatou Road, have you ever noticed a rather unusual building? A splash of pink amidst the urban landscape. This is the Melville Methodist Church. It’s a building that has seen many transformations, echoing the ever-evolving spirit of Johannesburg. The Melville Methodist Church stands as a testament to a small congregation with a “big heart for God, for Melville, and for the city of Johannesburg.” Built in 1904, the Melville Methodist Church wasn’t always pink. It started its life as a Methodist church. Later, it became a synagogue, adding another layer of intrigue to its history. For a period, the church stood abandoned, a silent observer of the city’s hustle and bustle. Then, it briefly housed an antique shop, its doors often mysteriously closed. Local whispers hinted at hauntings, adding a touch of the supernatural to its story. More recently, the building took on a new life as the Blue Door Print Studio. Master printer Collin Cole transformed the interior into a vibrant red art space, while keeping the exterior its signature pink. The name “Blue Door” comes from Cole’s previous studio. He literally brought the blue door with him. It now graces the garden, a quirky reminder of the past. Inside, the church-like atmosphere remains. The space is filled with eclectic art, creating one of Joburg’s most unique artistic havens. The Melville Methodist Church, in its pink and red glory, stands as a symbol of resilience, adaptation, and the enduring power of community. It’s a place where history whispers, art thrives, and faith finds its expression. A hidden gem in the heart of Melville, waiting to be discovered.
