Beneath a once-ordinary neem tree, a miracle unfolded at Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Perambur Sakthi Peedam. In the 1960s, this unassuming tree, unlike its bitter counterparts, yielded a sweet nectar. Villagers discovered its healing properties, sharing the nectar with the sick and ailing. The tree became a sanctuary, protected from harm. Then, in 1966, a fierce storm uprooted the neem tree. It revealed a Swayambu, a self-emerged oval-shaped rock formation. A humble hut was built to protect this sacred discovery. Poojas, or rituals of worship, began. Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Perambur Sakthi Peedam became known as the “Throne of Evolved Souls,” a place where 21 Siddhars, enlightened beings, are said to rest in Jeeva Samadhi. For years, the Swayambu remained the sole object of worship. Then, on November 25, 1977, an idol of Mother Adi Parashakti was installed. The three-foot idol depicts the goddess seated upon a thousand-petaled lotus, a symbol of meditation. She holds a lotus bud in her right hand, representing knowledge, and a mudra, a symbolic hand gesture, in her left. Her hair is intricately plaited and knotted upwards, resembling a crown. Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Perambur Sakthi Peedam embraces the principle of “One Mother, One Humanity.” It proclaims the unity of humankind as children of the Mother Goddess. Here, a unique spiritual experience occurs. Through Arulvakku, or oracle, the goddess herself communicates with her devotees. Bangaru Adigalar, revered as Amma, or Mother, guides the divine administration. Her word is law. Uniquely, women are permitted to perform poojas within the sanctum sanctorum. At the entrance stands the Om Sakthi Stage, adorned with the mantra “Om Sakthi” and the Trishul, or trident, of the Mother. Devotees circumambulate this stage thrice before entering. Significantly, the traditional Nava Grahas, or nine planets, are absent. The Mother assures that those devoted to her need not pray to planetary lords, as they are merely her officers. Within the sanctum sanctorum, the Swayambu and the Mother’s idol reside. The Mother’s presence extends to the Putrumandapam, a snake pit. Here, she appears as a cobra, continuing her blessings. It is in this place that the oracle is delivered. Nearby is the Saptha Kanniyar Kovil, the Temple of Seven Virgins. Unusually, this walled temple has no roof. It was built by local Harijans, demonstrating the Mother’s all-encompassing love. Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Perambur Sakthi Peedam is a place where miracles are witnessed, spirituality thrives, and the divine connects with humanity.
