Ever wondered what it feels like to stand on the highest natural point in northern Hamburg? That’s where we are now, atop the Mellenberg. This isn’t just any hill. The Mellenberg is a testament to the power of ice and time.

The Mellenberg rises 63.3 meters above sea level. This elevation makes it the highest natural point in the Wandsbek district. It is also the highest in Hamburg’s north.

This rounded hill is more than just a scenic spot. The Mellenberg is a Weichsel Ice Age terminal moraine. It formed between the Volksdorf and Meiendorf glacier tongues. Picture massive glaciers shaping the landscape. The Mellenberg emerged as the glacier paused. It deposited sediment over an extended period. This type of moraine is called a Satzendmoräne.

Most northern German terminal moraines are “Stauchmoränen”. These form when a glacier shears, deforms, and displaces older layers. This process is similar to mountain formation and is called glacial tectonics. For stacking to occur, the underground storage conditions must allow the layers to shear off. This includes the presence of clay and silt layers. However, only sands and gravels are known from the boreholes around the Mellenberg. It is therefore assumed that the Mellenberg is a terminal moraine.

The Mellenberg’s geological significance has earned it recognition as a Geotope by the Hamburg Geological Survey. This designation highlights its importance for understanding the region’s geological history.

The Mellenberg is located at the eastern end of the Volksdorf forest. It invites exploration via several hiking trails. Imagine strolling through the trees to reach this high point.

In the 20th century, a viewing tower once stood here. Built at the end of the 19th century, an old oak tree was integrated into the construction. This offered panoramic views. The first tower had to be replaced in 1904 due to its dilapidated condition. The new tower lasted until 1922. Both towers were very popular. They were especially attractive to the many out-of-town visitors to Volksdorf. Though the tower is gone, the view remains impressive.

In 1925, a terracotta monument was erected on the Mellenberg. It commemorated the 48 Volksdorf residents who died in World War I. Sadly, it was destroyed in 1945.

Even today, the Mellenberg’s legacy lives on in the surrounding streets. The Mellenbergweg was named in 1903. The Mellenbergstieg followed in 1950. Finally, the Mellenbergkamp was named in 1986. These names connect the community to this unique landmark.

So, as you stand here on the Mellenberg, remember its story. It is a story of ice, time, and the enduring connection between nature and community. The Mellenberg is more than just a hill. It’s a piece of Hamburg’s history beneath your feet.
