Can you imagine a town named after honey? Right here before us lies Melissia Municipal Unit. Melissia takes its name from the Greek word for honey, “meli.” This charming suburb in northeastern Athens, part of the Penteli municipality, has a rich history. Melissia Municipal Unit became a separate community in 1946, breaking away from Marousi. Later, in 1990, it achieved municipality status. Melissia blossomed in the 1980s with a population boom, growing by nearly 65%. Today, Melissia Municipal Unit boasts a population of over 23,000. It’s nestled at the foot of the Penteli mountains. This provides a welcome escape from the bustling Athenian city center, just 12 kilometers away. Melissia Municipal Unit offers a tranquil, green residential environment. It features modern amenities. These include six primary schools, two high schools, a lyceum, and a municipal swimming pool. The area surrounding Melissia Municipal Unit is largely residential. The northern parts, however, transition into the forested slopes of Penteli Mountain. Sadly, a significant portion of these forests fell victim to devastating fires in late August 2007. Before its residential boom, Melissia was sparsely populated. It was known primarily for beekeeping, which gave the town its name. There were also two sanatoriums in the area, taking advantage of the perceived health benefits of the mountain air. The initial influx of residents in the early 1940s were largely Greek refugees from Pontos and Asia Minor. They sought a new home. They found it here in the tranquil foothills of Penteli. Melissia Municipal Unit stands as a testament to their resilience. It evolved from a quiet haven for beekeeping and recuperation into a thriving community.
