Have you ever wondered about the secrets of the ancient city of Ankara? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Right in front of us stands a mosque, not just any mosque, but the Melike Hatun Mosque. It’s a beautiful example of Classical Ottoman design and a striking landmark in the heart of Ankara. This mosque wasn’t always here. It was opened to the public in 2017, but the name Melike Hatun goes back much further, to the fourteenth century. This remarkable woman, Melike Hatun, played a vital role in the city’s development. She was a philanthropist and commissioner of many public buildings. There are hints that she may have been one of the Anatolian Seljuk sultan’s daughters, but no one is completely certain. But one thing is for sure, she left her mark on Ankara. This mosque, built in her honour, is a testament to her legacy. The mosque is so grand, with its four soaring minarets topped with three balconies each. Each minaret soars an incredible 72 meters into the sky. The dome of the mosque is truly impressive, stretching 27 meters across and rising 47 meters high. Imagine walking through the imposing entrance doors of the Melike Hatun Mosque, adorned with golden leaf inscriptions, and being greeted by the spacious interior, adorned with warm colours and intricate designs. A place for prayer, reflection, and a symbol of Ankara’s rich history. The mosque isn’t just a place of worship, it is a vibrant hub for the community. It has halls for meetings, a museum, and a congress center. It is both a place for quiet contemplation and a center for cultural exchange, just like Melike Hatun herself would have wanted. So, let the Melike Hatun Mosque inspire you with its story of faith, tradition, and the enduring legacy of a remarkable woman.
