“Moin” and “Herzlich Willkommen” to the Melanchthonkirche. This church stands as a testament to a remarkable man. It’s named after Philipp Melanchthon a reformer theologian and humanist. Born in 1497 Melanchthon was a child prodigy. His exceptional linguistic abilities were evident early on. At only 21 he became a Greek professor at the University of Wittenberg. He befriended Martin Luther becoming his companion and eloquent collaborator. Melanchthon was a pivotal figure in the 16th-century religious and intellectual landscape. He’s considered alongside Luther the theological author of the Wittenberg Reformation. After Luther’s death Melanchthon became the Reformation’s spokesperson. He died in Wittenberg in 1560. He rests next to Luther in the Schlosskirche.
The Melanchthon Church community’s history is equally fascinating. By 1923 the western district of the Luther congregation in Bahrenfeld had grown to 13000 members. A new community center became necessary. A vibrant community life developed. In 1928 construction began on a parsonage with a confirmation classroom. Architect Ostermeyer designed the building. Two rooms were added in 1938. One was converted into a larger worship space.
On April 1 1947 the western district of the Luther congregation in Bahrenfeld became the independent Melanchthon Church congregation.
