Did you know that Mekuda’s Lodge stands as a testament to Livingstone’s rich history? The story of Livingstone is intertwined with the dreams of explorers and the echoes of colonial ambition. Livingstone, the city, began as a small settlement called Old Drift. It was a crossing point on the Zambezi River.

Livingstone owes its existence to the magnificent Victoria Falls. The Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone named the falls after Queen Victoria. His journey opened up central Africa. It attracted missionaries, hunters, traders, and prospectors.

The Old Drift settlement suffered from malaria due to its low-lying location. The discovery of coal and copper prompted the authorities to find a better site for the town. In 1904 the railway reached Victoria Falls. By 1905, a bridge connected Northern and Southern Rhodesia.

The colonial administration moved to higher ground, creating a new town also named Livingstone. This location was healthier. By 1907, Livingstone became the capital of North Western Rhodesia. The town had hotels, restaurants, and various businesses.

Livingstone became the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1911. However, the capital moved to Lusaka in 1935. Livingstone retained its tourist capital status due to its proximity to Victoria Falls. The town became the adventure capital of Southern Africa.

Many historical buildings still stand. The North Western Hotel and St Andrews Church are prime examples. The Livingstone Museum houses artifacts related to David Livingstone. It showcases Zambia’s ethnological heritage.
