Meinstein Mosaic

Across the square, the Meinstein Mosaic beckons. This isn’t just any pavement. It’s a demographic map etched in stone, a testament to Neukölln’s diverse heritage. Commissioned as part of the Aktion! Karl-Marx-Straße project, the Meinstein Mosaic, or “My Stone,” transforms the Platz der Stadt Hof. Tunisian-Russian artist Nadia Kaabi-Linke envisioned a mosaic reflecting the origins of Neukölln’s residents. Like the people themselves, the paving stones originate from all corners of the globe. But the arrangement of these stones wasn’t predetermined. Neukölln residents actively participated in workshops, shaping the mosaic’s design, making it a truly collaborative piece of art. They shared their personal stories and perspectives, imbuing the Meinstein with the very essence of the community. On “Mosaic Day” in May 2011, the square pulsed with life as residents celebrated the project’s culmination. Participants laid model stones, marking the precise locations for their chosen pavers, their personal mark on their shared space. So, as you walk across the Meinstein Mosaic, remember that each stone tells a story. Each stone represents a voice, a journey, a piece of Neukölln’s vibrant soul.
