A whisper of history. That’s what the Meilsdorfer Mühle offers. Standing before this remarkable structure you feel the weight of time. This isn’t just any old windmill. The Meilsdorfer Mühle near Hamburg boasts a rich past. For centuries it ground grain its sails catching the wind. It served the surrounding farms. Farmers were obligated to bring their grain here. This was a mandatory mill a herrschaftliche Zwangsmühle until 1854. They paid the miller for his services. The miller in turn paid rent to the owner. At that time the mill belonged to the Ahrensburg estate. This was owned by Ernst Heinrich Graf von Schimmelmann.

Imagine Martin Strycker. He leased the mill around 1900. He ran a bustling business. It wasn’t just milling. He also had a transport business and a tavern. This was common. Millers often served as innkeepers. Farmers waited while their grain was ground. They’d spend time at the tavern.

Strycker modernized the mill in 1930. A diesel engine replaced the wind. The mill’s wings and cap were removed. Only the mill stump remained with a flat roof. In 1945 electricity arrived. The grinding processes became electric. Strycker continued milling grain until 1969. He also produced crushed grain and sold animal feed.

The mill changed hands in 1970. The new owner transformed it into a home. He also added a new cap with four wings. Today the Meilsdorfer Mühle stands as a testament to its past. A peaceful retreat in the countryside. It offers a unique space for meetings and events. The spacious rooms hold up to 50 people. The grounds offer a tranquil escape. It’s a place for inspiration and reflection. A place to reconnect with nature. A blend of history and modernity. This is the Meilsdorfer Mühle.
