Ever wondered where Bollywood magic comes to life? Here at Mehboob Studio, dreams become reality. Founded in 1954 by the visionary director and producer Mehboob Khan, this studio is more than just a place it is a Bollywood icon.

Mehboob Khan, a celebrated figure in Indian cinema, established Mehboob Productions in 1942. He dreamt of a studio closer to the heart of Mumbai. Older studios were far away. He chose Bandra, a quiet seaside area then. In 1951, he acquired the land near Mount Mary’s Church. By 1954, Mehboob Studio was ready.

Spanning 20000 square yards, Mehboob Studio has five shooting stages. It also features a recording theatre. The studio quickly became a favorite of leading filmmakers. They loved its vivid atmosphere and accessible location. Directors preferred it over renting bungalows.

Mehboob Studio is known for films like Mother India. This 1957 masterpiece won Filmfare Awards for Best Film and Best Director. It even earned an Academy Award nomination. Mother India cemented Mehboob Studio’s place in film history.

Many stars were introduced here. Chandramohan, Motilal, Nadira, Ashok Kumar, Nargis, Nimmi, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Raaj Kumar all graced this studio. The musical genius Naushad Ali and cinematographer Faredoon A Irani were also closely associated with Mehboob Productions.

Guru Dutt filmed his iconic Kaagaz Ke Phool here. Dev Anand shot many films under his Navketan Films banner here. He started with Hum Dono and continued with Guide. He even had an office here for 20 years.

Mehboob Khan’s later films did not achieve the same success as Mother India. Son of India in 1962 was the last film under his banner. He died in 1964 leaving behind debts.

The studio’s fortunes revived in the 1970s. The rights to Mother India returned to the family. A recording studio was added. Mehboob Studio survived a fire in 2000.

In more recent times, Mehboob Studio has reinvented itself. In 2010 and 2011, it hosted an exhibition by sculptor Anish Kapoor. The Mahindra Blues Festival was held here in 2011 and 2012.

Mehboob Studio continues to be a hub of activity. It is booked to full capacity. The legacy of Mehboob Khan lives on.

So, as you stand here, remember the countless stories created within these walls. The stars who walked these grounds. The dreams that took flight. Mehboob Studio is not just a studio it is a testament to the enduring power of Indian cinema.
