The city is divided into two parts a high town to the north and a lower town to the south-southwest. The Knights Hospitaller built the high town entirely. The entire Medieval city is encompassed by a four kilometer long wall a formidable defense.

For two centuries they ruled. They repelled attacks from the Mamluk fleet in 1444 and a larger Ottoman invasion force in 1480.

Then came the Ottomans. In 1522 after a six month siege they took the city. They added their own buildings mosques baths and mansions. The Greeks were forced to move to the suburbs outside the walls. Yet the Medieval character of the city remained. The Ottomans blended their architecture with that of the Knights creating a unique blend.

The Italian occupation followed. They renovated and restored the city to its Medieval appearance. They removed Ottoman buildings in the process.
