In the 1980s, Canale 5 was joined by Italia 1. Berlusconi bought it from Rusconi in 1982. Rete 4 followed. It was acquired from Arnoldo Mondadori Editore in 1984. These three networks became the foundation of Mediaset. They broke the state monopoly on television.

But Mediaset faced challenges. In 2008, the European Court of Justice ruled against it. The court said Mediaset unfairly used TV frequencies to broadcast Rete 4. They should have been given to Europa 7. Rete 4 should broadcast via satellite. But Rete 4 continues its operation on analogue frequencies. It also broadcasts on DVB-T.
Despite these challenges, Mediaset continued to expand. It launched new channels. It invested in radio. RadioMediaset was formed in 2016. It manages Radio Monte Carlo and R101. It also manages Radio 105 Network and Virgin Radio.
Mediaset even moved its headquarters to the Netherlands in 2019. The company became Mediaset N.V. In 2021, it announced a major restructuring. It formed a new parent company called MFE MediaForEurope N.V.
Today, Mediaset competes with RAI and Sky Italia. It operates in Italy and Spain. The company has two divisions. One is Integrated Television Operations. The other is Network Infrastructure Services and Management. The Integrated Television Operations division broadcasts commercial television. It offers thematic channels. These channels include football, cinema, TV series, and documentaries. The Network Infrastructure Services and Management division manages infrastructure networks. It provides electronic communications services.
