Do you know that you are standing on what remains of a volcanic crater? This is Media Luna in the Galápagos. It is a crescent-shaped hill offering stunning views. Media Luna is one of the highest elevations on Santa Cruz Island.

The name Media Luna means half-moon in Spanish. This perfectly describes its unique shape. It is what remains of a large volcanic crater.

To get here we took a 5 km trail. The trail took us through the agricultural zone. Then we entered the Miconia zone. This zone is named after an endemic shrub. It is only found in the highlands of Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal. Sadly this unique vegetation is threatened by fire and invasive plants. Finally the trail led us to the Fern and Sedge zones. These are typical of the highlands.

Media Luna is more than just a pretty view. It is also an important nesting site. The Galápagos petrel nests here. These birds only visit the island to nest. They create burrows in the crater walls. Please stay on the trail to protect these nests.

Keep an eye out for other birds. Peregrine falcons and Galápagos rails can be spotted here. The views from Media Luna are wonderful. You can see the island and its surroundings.

Bellavista is the starting point for the hike to Media Luna. This village is 7 km inland from Puerto Ayora. It was once a farming center. Now it is also a residential area.

The trail beyond Media Luna continues to Puntudo. Puntudo is an old splatter cone. The trail also leads to Cerro Crocker. This is the highest point on the island. From there you can see the southern seas and Puerto Ayora.

The Galápagos Islands are volcanic in origin. They were formed by a hot spot. The Nazca plate moves over this hot spot. This creates volcanoes. The islands are different ages. The oldest islands are to the east. The youngest are to the west.

The climate here is influenced by ocean currents. The cold Humboldt and Cromwell currents make it cooler and drier. This creates diverse ecosystems. You might see sea lions and penguins in the same area.

Charles Darwin visited the Galápagos in 1835. He was inspired by the unique species here. He developed his theory of evolution. It was not the finches that inspired him most. It was the mockingbirds. Each island has a different species of mockingbird.

Remember your visit to Media Luna. Appreciate its beauty. Think about its volcanic past. Consider the unique wildlife. It is a special place in the Galápagos. It is a reminder of nature’s power and fragility.
