Approaching the Medal of Honor Memorial, a wave of reverence washes over you. The Medal of Honor Memorial stands as a poignant tribute to the profound sacrifices made by those who served in the Vietnam War. Located at Penn’s Landing, this memorial is more than just granite and bronze. It’s a vessel of stories, a testament to courage, and a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom. The memorial’s centerpiece is the Wall of Names. This semicircular wall, crafted from polished charcoal-grey granite, bears the names of 648 Philadelphia natives who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their names, slightly raised on the wall’s center, whisper stories of bravery and loss. On the north side, the Wall of Scenes features etched photographs from the war. These images offer glimpses into the realities of the conflict, capturing moments of both camaraderie and hardship. Atop the south side of the memorial, the flags of the United States and the former Republic of Vietnam flutter in the breeze. The eight-foot bronze statue of Cpl. Michael J. Crescenz stands tall. He was the only Philadelphian to receive the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War. Adjacent to Crescenz’s statue, the Purple Heart Monument honors all combat wounded who received the Purple Heart. This monument holds a special distinction.
