In 1949 the orphanage closed. Some buildings continued as a children’s home until 1953. Later the area became a base for border troops of the GDR. After German reunification in 1990 the area was redeveloped.
The city created the Rummelsburger Bucht development area. The two remaining boys’ houses were renovated in 2003. They became apartments. Streets were named to honor the orphanage’s history. An den Knabenhäusern and Gustav-Holzmann-Straße remind us of the past.
