Here stands the Meadowlands Arena a silent giant of entertainment history. For years this venue roared with the energy of sports and music. Originally known as Brendan Byrne Arena it opened July 2 1981. Its first event was a Bruce Springsteen concert.

The Meadowlands Arena became home to several sports teams. The New Jersey Nets moved here in 1981. A year later the New Jersey Devils joined them. The Seton Hall Pirates also called this arena home. Imagine the roar of the crowd. Picture the Nets battling rivals. Feel the ice beneath the Devils skates.

Throughout its life the Meadowlands Arena changed names. It became Continental Airlines Arena in 1996. Then it was known as Izod Center in 2007. Despite the name changes its legacy remained. It hosted the 1996 NCAA Men’s Final Four. The Devils clinched two Stanley Cups here. Bruce Springsteen played 55 shows at Meadowlands Arena. These included a 15 night sold out run in 1999.

But times changed. The Devils and Seton Hall moved to Newark in 2007. The Nets departed for Brooklyn. The Meadowlands Arena struggled. It closed its doors in April 2015.

Yet the story doesn’t end there. The Meadowlands Arena found new life. It became a rehearsal space for major concert tours. NBCUniversal used it for television filming. Shows like The Equalizer and The Walking Dead: Dead City were filmed here. The arena has been used as a station for the NJSEA EMS. Also the Winner’s Club lounge restaurant is the quarters for the New Jersey State Police.

Though quiet now the Meadowlands Arena holds memories of roaring crowds and unforgettable performances. It stands as a testament to the ever changing landscape of sports and entertainment. It is a versatile venue that adapted to new needs after its initial purpose faded. It started as a sports and concert hub. Today it supports the arts and public services. The Meadowlands Arena remains a vital part of New Jersey’s Meadowlands Sports Complex.
