Was this mansion always destined to be an art museum? Here at the McNay Art Museum, we find ourselves pondering that very question. It’s not your typical museum building. This Spanish Colonial Revival mansion has a story to tell. The McNay Art Museum began its life as the home of Marion Koogler McNay. An heiress with a passion for art, Marion moved to San Antonio in 1926. In 1927, she had this beautiful 24-room house constructed, a house brimming with her own artistic touches, from the decorative tiles to the painted ceilings. Little did she know she was laying the foundation for Texas’ first modern art museum! After her death in 1950, Marion’s generosity became evident. She bequeathed her home, art collection, and a sizeable endowment to the city of San Antonio. Her vision: to establish a haven for modern art, a vision that became a reality in 1954 when the McNay Art Museum opened its doors to the world. But the story doesn’t end there. The McNay continued to grow, expanding its collection to encompass over 20,000 pieces. From the brushstrokes of European masters like Picasso, Matisse, and Gauguin to the vibrant canvases of American artists like Georgia O’Keeffe, a journey through the McNay is a journey through art history itself. As you explore, imagine Marion wandering these halls, her love for art echoing through the years. The McNay Art Museum is a testament to the power of one person’s passion to inspire generations to come.
