“Empowering scholars for college and life” is more than a motto here at McDowell Center. It’s a daily mission. Established in 1924, McDowell Center began its journey serving the northwest side of Detroit.
Today, McDowell proudly serves over 350 scholars from kindergarten through eighth grade. Over 90% of these scholars live within a mile and a half of McDowell Center. This creates a close-knit community. Scholars feel safe and develop meaningful relationships with adults.

What makes McDowell unique? It’s the dedication to providing a world-class education. The goal is to empower scholars and help them make their dreams a reality. The college prep curriculum ensures students are ready for higher education.
The academic skills are central. But McDowell Center also prioritizes a holistic approach. Character development and a scholar’s sense of self are cultivated. This is critical to developing happy, stable, and successful human beings.
During the school day, scholars benefit from music and financial literacy classes. These are part of the core curriculum. McDowell also partners with community organizations. These partnerships offer after-school enrichment and athletic programming. Racquet Up Detroit is one such program.
Transportation can be a worry for parents. McDowell families have access to free bus transportation to and from school each day. This makes life easier for everyone.
McDowell Center instills in its scholars the skill and will to prepare them for success in college and life. The vision is clear. Each student is important and valued. Structure and guidance are provided for every child.
Transparency and integrity are paramount. Leadership opportunities are available for staff and students. Good, healthy reciprocal relationships are fostered. Student, school, and community engagement is encouraged. McDowell provides an environment where children are fully supported and feel comfortable.
