What was once an old roller hockey rink is now a beloved community space. McCreesh Playground, located in Southwest Philadelphia’s Mount Moriah District, has a special story to tell. In the early 2010s, skaters, neighbors, and parents came together with a shared dream: transforming the neglected rink into something extraordinary. They approached Tim King, the McCreesh Recreation Supervisor, their plea met with enthusiastic support. The community rallied, skaters from all over Philly joined the cause, and McCreesh Playground became a beacon of collaboration. Through meetings and fundraisers, they breathed life into their vision. Five permanent obstacles arose on the site, a testament to their dedication, just in time for Go Skate Day 2011. But this was just the beginning for McCreesh Playground. The dream expanded, and in 2016, McCreesh Skatepark was born, boasting a diverse set of features. The park’s defining element, a long, winding S spine, sets it apart from any other in the city, a testament to the community’s vision and the power of collective action. McCreesh Playground embodies the spirit of transformation, a place where a forgotten corner became a vibrant hub of activity.
