Ever wondered where Chennai’s hockey heartbeat resonates most strongly? It is right here at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium. This stadium is more than just a sports venue. It is a testament to Chennai’s enduring love affair with field hockey.

The Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium was originally known as Corporation Stadium. It stood here with its hockey gravel ground. It also had tennis courts plus basketball and volleyball areas. In 1995 it was reborn. It was rebuilt for the SAF Games and renamed in honor of M. Radhakrishna Pillai.

This stadium quickly rose to international fame. It hosted the SAF Games in 1995. Then it welcomed the Champions Trophy not once but twice in 1996 and 2005. The Asia Cup also found its home here in 2007. India even beat South Korea here 7–2.

But the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium is not just about international glory. It is the heart of Chennai’s hockey scene. It hosts countless Chennai Hockey Association league matches. It was even the home of the Chennai Cheetahs.

Imagine the roar of the crowd during the India-Pakistan series in 1999. So many fans packed in that the fencing broke during the SAF Games final. An extra gallery was built to accommodate everyone.

The stadium underwent a significant upgrade in 2004. The Sports Authority of Tamil Nadu redesigned it. The stadium was prepared to host the 2005 Champions Trophy. A new synthetic hockey surface was laid. International standard floodlights were installed.

The stadium is close to areas steeped in hockey tradition. These areas include Thousand Lights Vepery Triplicane Royapettah and Mylapore. These neighborhoods have always supported hockey teams.

Young players from the districts remember their first time here. Vinod Rayer felt goosebumps the first time he played on this artificial turf.

Even today plans are underway to ensure the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium remains a premier sporting venue. The turf is set to be relaid. The seating arrangements and dressing rooms are to be rehauled.

So the next time you hear the crack of a hockey stick or the roar of a Chennai crowd remember this stadium. The Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium is more than just a field. It is where Chennai’s hockey dreams come alive.
