“Did you know that Mayes Cottage was once called Pleasant Place?” I ask. This charming little house stands before you a testament to Queensland’s history. Built in 1887 by the Mayes family it remained their home for nearly a century. Imagine the Mayes family arriving in Brisbane from England in 1871. They started with a humble slab hut a simple two-room structure that still stands today. It was only later that they built Pleasant Place the impressive home you see before you now.

Mayes Cottage is more than just a house. It’s a portal to the past. The original furniture remains much of it dating from the 1880s to the 1930s. See the fine bone china on the dining room table? Picture the family gathered for meals. The ornate beds and mosquito nets hint at the warm Queensland nights.

But the story of Mayes Cottage isn’t just about fine furnishings. It’s a story of resilience and hard work. John Mayes a local pioneer took up 321 acres of land in the Kingston area then known as Scrubby Creek. The family’s livelihood came from timber getting providing materials for Ipswich mines. They also planted fruit trees and even kept bees. Their cottage stands as a symbol of their success.

Tragedy also struck the Mayes family. Their daughter Ruth tragically drowned in a well on the property. Their son Joshua died young from typhoid fever. These losses remind us that even amidst prosperity life can be unpredictable.

The original kitchen is a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era. A simple rectangular building. Note the corrugated iron oven. This speaks volumes about the family’s resourcefulness. Their life wasn’t always easy. Yet they thrived making their mark on this land.

The years passed. The dairy was added in 1922. Milking took place under a shady fig tree. The family continued their farming and timber operations. By the mid-1950s suburban development encroached. The Mayes family sold most of their land. But thanks to a community effort this little piece of history survived. Today Mayes Cottage is a registered Queensland Heritage site. It remains a beloved house museum.

Step inside Mayes Cottage. Take a moment to reflect on the lives of those who lived here. See their story in the rooms the furniture the tools. This cottage whispers tales of pioneer life in Queensland. Remember their story. A story of resilience love and loss a story woven into the very fabric of this historic dwelling.
