Established in 1906 the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Dusseldorf boasts a rich history. Initially known as the Konigliches Prinz-Georg-Gymnasium it was renamed in 1947. The name change honored Max Planck a Nobel Prize winner in Physics. Even before his death Planck approved this honor.

The school’s journey wasn’t always smooth. Its original building in Pempelfort was destroyed during World War II. After the war the school found a new home. This was in Stockum a different part of Dusseldorf. The current building complex on Koetschaustrasse opened in 1956. It has expanded many times since then.

Originally a boys-only school the Max-Planck-Gymnasium opened its doors to girls in 1973. Today it’s a thriving co-educational institution. It serves around 900 students. It’s known for its strong emphasis on science and mathematics. This makes it a MINT-friendly school. Despite this focus the school doesn’t offer computer science classes since 2020. The school excels in other ways. It participates in numerous competitions. It even has a First Tech Challenge team a rare achievement.

The Max-Planck-Gymnasium’s commitment to excellence also extends to its student-run businesses. Some have even won awards. The student firm Max Oldschool won a special prize. This was for its excellent website in 2016 as part of the Junior Programme.

International collaborations are also important. The school has an exchange program with the DC Everest Senior High School in Wisconsin USA. There’s also an annual exchange with a Lycee in Reims France. This is in connection with the French language curriculum. The Max-Planck-Gymnasium is more than just a school. It is a community that encourages excellence innovation and global perspectives. Its long history and forward-thinking approach have shaped it into a remarkable institution. It’s a testament to the power of education and the spirit of Dusseldorf.
