Why is this statue so significant? The Max Michallek Statue stands proudly here on what will soon be Max-Michallek-Platz. This bronze sculpture honors a Dortmund legend. Max Michallek a local boy from Borsigplatz was more than just a football player.

He was born Max Michalski in 1922. He rose through the ranks of Borussia Dortmund’s youth team. He became a star midfielder. His long legs earned him the nickname “the Spider”. Some say the nickname was because he cleverly controlled the team’s strategy from behind. He had a powerful offensive drive. This sometimes frustrated his teammates. His relentless tackling and almost flawless play also frustrated opponents.

One anecdote stands out. In the 1957 championship final against Uwe Seeler. Seeler reportedly taunted him saying “Grandpa still playing?” The then 35-year-old Michallek answered on the pitch. Dortmund won 4-1. Seeler didn’t stand a chance. Michallek’s skill and vision led Dortmund to their second consecutive championship. After the match he famously told Seeler “I’ll still be playing against you at seventy”. Sadly he didn’t live that long.

Michallek was an extraordinary character on and off the field. He was a true “Ruhr area” man. A loyal friend with a good heart. This might explain why he never played for the national team. National coach Sepp Herberger disliked his independent style. He also missed a national team training camp to care for his sick wife. The DFB never invited him again.

His career with Borussia Dortmund spanned years. He won six Oberliga West titles. He achieved two German championships in 1956 and 1957. This was remarkable. No other team has ever replicated this feat. He retired in 1960. He worked as an assistant coach under Hermann Lindemann from 1967 to 1973. He then retired to private life. He sadly died young at 62 on June 7 1985.

This statue isn’t just a monument. It celebrates a life dedicated to football and his community. It’s a symbol of Dortmund’s sporting heritage and local pride. Look closely at the details. The statue is made of recycled steel. It sits on a coal base a nod to Dortmund’s industrial past. It’s a fitting tribute to a true local hero. Remember Max Michallek. Remember his spirit. Remember the Spider.
