Ever been to a venue that has hosted both Olympic gold and the wrestling debut of Bill Goldberg? That’s the Maverik Center.
Originally known as the E Center, the Maverik Center is a multi-purpose arena in West Valley City. It stands as a beacon of entertainment and sports in the Salt Lake Valley.
Construction of the Maverik Center began in March 1996. It opened its doors on September 22, 1997. The very first event was a live episode of WCW Monday Nitro. It was a night to remember because it featured Bill Goldberg’s first wrestling match.
The arena changed its name in 2010. A partnership with Maverik, Inc., brought about the new moniker. This deal included exclusive sponsorship and advertising rights. The Maverik Center even features Maverik’s adventure theme.
The Maverik Center’s history is closely tied to the 2002 Winter Olympics. West Valley City proposed building a new ice hockey facility. The Salt Lake Organizing Committee loaned the city $7 million for construction. During the games, the arena hosted the ice hockey events. It also hosted ice sledge hockey during the 2002 Winter Paralympics. The Maverik Center could hold 8,400 spectators, plus press. An impressive 96.7% of available tickets were sold.
The Maverik Center is home to the Utah Grizzlies. This ECHL team has played at the arena since 2005. Before that, an AHL team also called the Utah Grizzlies played here. The Salt Lake City Stars of the NBA G-League moved into the Maverik Center in 2022.
The Maverik Center has hosted a variety of events. The Utah Freezz played indoor soccer here. The Utah Warriors played indoor football. The arena even hosted the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League for a time.
Concerts have also been a major draw at the Maverik Center. Phish famously performed Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon album here in 1998. Depeche Mode has played at the arena three times. One Direction and Sam Smith have also graced its stage.
Designed by HOK, a top arena architect, the Maverik Center offers modern amenities. It combines the feel of a large arena. It provides the service of a smaller theater.
So, whether you’re here for a hockey game, a concert, or another event, remember the Maverik Center’s rich history. From the Olympics to live music, it’s a place of unforgettable moments.
