Maveeran Alagumuthu Kone was born on July 11 1728. He hailed from Kattalankulam in Thoothukudi District. He rose to become a military leader in Ettayapuram. Later he became the ruler of Kattalangulam.

The 1750s marked the beginning of British domination in Tamil Nadu. They sought to impose taxes on the people. Maveeran Alagumuthu Kone stood firm against this oppression. He refused to yield to their demands.

In 1755 Maveeran Alagumuthu Kone and his forces clashed with Colonel Eron Keran’s army. They emerged victorious. This victory showcased his military prowess.

However in 1759 Maveeran Alagumuthu Kone faced defeat against the British. Maruthanayagam’s forces overpowered him. Yet his spirit remained unbroken.

Captured and facing execution Maveeran Alagumuthu Kone displayed remarkable defiance. He was tied to a cannon. He was blasted into pieces. His loyalty to his land remained steadfast.

His sacrifice is not forgotten. The government of Tamil Nadu holds a Pooja ceremony every year on July 11. This is to honor his memory. In 2012 a documentary film chronicled his life.

In 2015 the Government of India released a postage stamp. It featured Maveeran Alagumuthu Kone. This recognized his contribution to the country.
