Sidi Abdelaziz Tebbâa, a name whispered with reverence in the bustling souks of Marrakesh, rests here in this mausoleum. Before you stands not just a building, but a testament to a life interwoven with the spiritual fabric of this city. The Mausoleum of Sidi Abou Faris Abdelaziz Tebbâa, a revered scholar and saint, is more than just a tomb. It’s a beacon of faith for many, a place where hopes and prayers converge. Sidi Abdelaziz, one of the Seven Saints of Marrakesh, passed away in 1508. His legacy, however, continues to resonate within these walls. He was a prominent disciple of the Sufi master al-Jazuli. His wisdom and teachings, honed at the al-Attarine Madrasa in Fes, established him as al-Jazuli’s spiritual successor. The Mausoleum of Sidi Abou Faris Abdelaziz Tebbâa began its life under the Saadians in the 16th century. It has seen centuries of history unfold. The structure we see today bears the architectural fingerprints of both the Saadian and Alaouite dynasties. Moulay Muhammad ibn Abdallah, the governor of Marrakesh and later sultan, played a key role in its restoration and expansion. He commissioned the magnificent dome that crowns the tomb, a testament to the saint’s enduring influence. Sadly, in a twist of fate, the dome’s solid gold adornment was stolen in 1992. While the physical gold is gone, the spiritual gold of Sidi Abdelaziz’s teachings remains. The mausoleum is traditionally honored on Saturdays, a day when locals still come to pay their respects. Women, in particular, visit the Mausoleum of Sidi Abou Faris Abdelaziz Tebbâa seeking blessings for fertility and safe childbirth. This tradition speaks volumes about the deep-seated reverence for this holy figure. While non-Muslims cannot enter, the spirit of the place can be felt even from the outside. Peer through the small window on Rue Mouassine and glimpse this sacred space, a sanctuary nestled in the heart of the vibrant Medina.
