A sprawling campus unfolds before you. This is Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology. Established in 2001 it’s a public technical university. Formerly known as West Bengal University of Technology its name changed in 2015.
MAKAUT boasts a rich history. An expert committee formed in 1998 recommended its creation. The West Bengal Legislature formalized the university in 2001. Fully funded by the West Bengal government MAKAUT offers engineering and management degrees. It does so through affiliated colleges and its own departments.

The university’s main campus sits on forty acres in Haringhata. It is situated between Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya and IISER Kolkata. Male and female students live in the campus hostels.

The university’s academic achievements are noteworthy. The National Institutional Ranking Framework NIRF recognized MAKAUT. In 2024 NIRF placed MAKAUT within the 101-150 rank band for engineering colleges in India. It also ranked it within the 51-100 band for state public universities. Furthermore MAKAUT received accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council NAAC. It received a B++ grade and recognition by the University Grants Commission UGC. The National Board of Accreditation NBA also accredited some of its undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
