Gazing out across the serene waters, do you feel the history rippling towards us from Mattsee? Mattsee is a market town nestled by the lake. The lake shares its name with the town. We are in the district of Salzburg-Umgebung. The town is a Flachgau gem.

Mattsee boasts a history stretching back centuries. Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria founded the Mattsee Benedictine Abbey around 765. This act established Mattsee as a significant religious and cultural hub. In 993, the abbey became part of the Diocese of Passau. The Bishops of Passau then constructed Mattsee Castle in the 12th century.

The Mattsee monastery transformed into a college of canons. Since 1807, it has existed under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The abbey church showcases Gothic architecture. A prominent 60-meter steeple was added in 1766. Inside, you’ll find Baroque features. A museum adjoins the church. It displays paintings by Johann Michael Rottmayr. It also has an astronomical clock. There is also an 860 grant deed by King Louis the German.

Mattsee’s lake water is of excellent quality. Underground springs feed it. Many come to swim in its clear waters.

The Collegiate monastery in Mattsee lacks a formal rule. It operates as shared property among several priests. The monastery has a remarkable church. It also includes a museum, a library and a treasury. Georg Eder, a former Archbishop of Salzburg, was born in Mattsee.

Nearby the monastery, you’ll discover Schloss Mattsee. Its foundations date back to a castle built around 1100 A.D. Today, the castle houses community facilities and a restaurant. Its Baroque style is striking. The rock it stands on is a fossilized coral reef. Schloss Mattsee offers stunning views of the lake.

The Strandbad Mattsee, a public lido, was built around 1930. This was a time of optimism. Tourism was blooming due to the Salzburg Festival. It is now a rare architectural gem. Mattsee also provides hiking trails around the lake.

Mattsee offers more than just history and architecture. The fahr(T)raum museum displays Ernst Piëch’s car collection. He is the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche. The museum showcases milestones of mobility.

Anton Diabelli, the composer, was born in Mattsee in 1781. Dorothea Seyss-Inquart, daughter of Arthur Seyss-Inquart, also lives in Mattsee.

Mattsee is a pretty old community. It thrived in the Middle Ages. The town became a market town in 1935. Mattsee provides a blend of natural beauty and rich history. From its ancient monastery to its crystal-clear lake, Mattsee offers a unique glimpse into Austria’s past and present. As you soak in the scenery, remember the generations who have walked these shores. They shaped Mattsee into the charming town we see today.
