Perhaps you’ve glanced at this building before. It’s the Matthias-Erzberger-Haus. Many people pass by it without realizing its story.

The Matthias-Erzberger-Haus stands at Unter den Linden 71. It intersects Wilhelmstrasse. This building is more than just an office space. It’s a piece of German history.

Originally, this was the site of the Ministry of Public Education for East Germany. That was in 1961. The building had a practical design. It featured prefabricated elements. Some parts were decorated with Meissen ceramic tiles.

After German reunification, things changed. From 1993 to 1994, the building underwent major renovations. Only the steel frame remained. The exterior was redesigned using sandstone. The style became more modern.

In 2017, the building received a new name. It was named after Matthias Erzberger. He was a prominent politician. He signed the Compiègne armistice in 1918. Erzberger was assassinated in 1921. This renaming honored his service.

Helmut Kohl and Angela Merkel had offices here. They used them as former chancellors. The Matthias-Erzberger-Haus is home to offices for members of the German Parliament today. The ground floor features shops.

Look closely at the building’s architecture. It reflects different eras. The original design was simple and functional. The renovated facade incorporates neoclassical elements.

Take a moment to appreciate the portrait bust of Matthias Erzberger. It was created by Bertrand Freiesleben. The bust was installed in 2021. This commemorates the 100th anniversary of Erzberger’s death.

The Matthias-Erzberger-Haus has witnessed significant moments in German history. It started as a ministry in East Germany. Now, it serves the German Parliament. This building connects the past and the present.
