What fuels a nation’s heartland? Let’s explore the Mathura Refinery, a key energy player for India’s northwest. Mathura Refinery, commissioned in 1982, stands as a testament to India’s growing energy needs. Originally built with a capacity of 6.0 MMTPA, the Mathura Refinery was designed to address the petroleum product demands of the northwestern region, including the crucial National Capital Region. This makes it the sixth refinery of Indian Oil. Located along the Delhi-Agra National Highway, about 154 kilometers from Delhi, Mathura Refinery has undergone several expansions and upgrades. By 1989, its capacity had already been increased to 7.5 MMTPA. Later expansions, including the addition of a Once Through Hydrocracker Unit in 2000, further boosted its capacity to 8.0 MMTPA. The refinery’s evolution also includes the integration of modern units to meet evolving fuel standards. This includes units for Diesel Hydro-treating, Motor Spirit Quality Up-gradation, and FCC Gasoline Desulphurization. Mathura Refinery stands as a vital source of various petroleum products, from LPG and motor spirit to bitumen and sulfur. Interestingly, its proximity to the Taj Mahal adds another layer of responsibility. The refinery has taken significant steps to minimize its environmental impact, including the installation of advanced Sulphur Recovery Units and continuous air quality monitoring. Mathura Refinery even achieved a remarkable feat: it was among the first in India to produce BS VI grade fuels, supplying them to Delhi as early as April 2018. The Mathura Refinery is more than just an industrial complex. It’s a symbol of India’s energy journey, constantly adapting and evolving to meet the nation’s needs while striving for environmental consciousness.
