Originally known as Pomona Park, Mathewson Park received its current name in 1954. This isn’t just any park. It’s a testament to the community’s dedication to inclusion and fun. Mathewson Park recently underwent a transformation. In March 2021, a virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the reopening of its brand-new playground. This playground is designed with universal accessibility in mind. It ensures that children of all abilities can experience the joy of play.
The renovation was more than just a facelift. It was a complete overhaul. The old, worn-out equipment was replaced with modern, inclusive structures. Remember those wood chips that used to fill your shoes after a day at Mathewson Park? They’re gone. Now, a soft, clean rubber surface cushions little feet. The playground itself is now level with the surrounding sidewalk. This eliminates the concrete curb that once posed a challenge for some. Every part of the playground is easily accessible.
Mathewson Park’s new playground caters to children aged 2 to 12. A central play structure, accessible via wide ramps, invites exploration. Platforms at one and two feet high offer engaging games like tic-tac-toe and a xylophone. For those who love to climb, stairs lead to a four-foot platform with two slides. A separate swing structure includes swings designed for children with varied abilities. While the tall monkey bars are gone, a new structure with a maximum height of four feet provides a safe and exciting climbing experience.
But Mathewson Park hasn’t forgotten its roots. The beloved sandbox remains, ready to fill shoes and clothes with sandy memories. An elevated sand table offers additional access for everyone. There’s even a new accessible picnic bench with footings designed for wheelchair access. Parking has also been improved. A designated accessible parking spot, located on level ground on Pomona Avenue, provides a wide access area, replacing the previous spot on the slope of Adella Avenue. Mathewson Park represents Coronado’s commitment to creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome. It’s a place where children can play together, fostering friendships and understanding.
