Do you realize that the old name of Madhavaram is Mathavapuram? We are standing in a neighborhood in northern Chennai. It is also a taluk in Chennai District. Madhavaram is a zone in the Greater Chennai Corporation. Let’s explore Madhavaram.

Madhavaram is located between Perambur and Kodungaiyur. It had a population of 119105 in 2011. The Chennai district expanded in 2018. It transferred Madhavaram taluk from Tiruvallur district to Chennai district.

The Madhavaram taluk formed in 2009. The large Ambattur taluk split into two parts. The new Madhavaram taluk has two fircas. These are Madhavaram and Red Hills. It also has 36 villages.

Madhavaram offers a mix of apartments and individual houses. Some commercial complexes meet residents’ needs. It retains its green cover. Madhavaram remains a peaceful neighborhood.

Many good schools, colleges, and universities are in Madhavaram. These include Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. There is also Tamil Nadu Dr J Jayalalithaa Fisheries University. The Tamil Nadu Horticulture Institute is here too. Also, Jayagovind Harigopal Agarwal Agarsen College is in Madhavaram.

Chennai Metro, MTC buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws provide public transit. Perambur Railway Station is 15 minutes away. Proposed metro routes will connect Madhavaram to other places. Madhavaram has an inter-city bus terminus. It serves buses to Trichy, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The CMDA developed a truck terminal here. It spans 100 acres. This facilitates easy transportation.

National Highway-5 crosses Madhavaram. Jawaharlal Nehru Flyover and Madhavaram Red Hills Road also cross here. These make it well connected by road. NH-5 connects this area to coastal communities.

The main deity here is Kailasanathar. Karpagambal is his consort. She is Goddess Parvathi. The Kailasanadhar temple shows its Pallava roots with statues. The lingam here is reputedly the largest in Tamil Nadu.

The Kalivaradaraja Perumal Temple is about 500 years old. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Divine Mother Shakti is Kanakavalli Thayar. There is a 21-foot Anjaneya statue here. Pallava king Nandivarman constructed it in 676 AD.

Madhavaram’s milk dairy opened in 1963. New Zealand assisted under the Colombo Plan. The complex is 700 acres. It was built to accommodate the Central Dairy plant. It provides room for thousands of milch cattle.

The Madhavaram Botanical Garden covers 28 acres. It has almost 400 plant varieties. There is also a herbal garden and nursery here. It is the city’s largest botanical garden.
